Dean French picked up his first camera in 2016 and has not put it down since. What started as a hobby quickly turned into an obsession, and that obsession turned into TNR Protography. Based in Greymouth on the West Coast, he shoots everything from intimate portraits to full-day weddings, aerial drone work to real estate video.
No formal training, no photography school. Just thousands of hours behind the lens, a healthy addiction to getting the shot right, and the kind of punctuality your nan would approve of. He is the photographer who turns up early, blends into the room, and delivers images that actually look like your day.
Also the sole creator of Spot The Aurora - the number one aurora forecasting app built right here in New Zealand.
From a quick portrait to a full wedding day, drone aerials to commercial video. One person, all in.
Dean has won awards at both the 2025 NZAPA Awards and the 2026 Asia Pacific Photography Awards. Not bad for someone who taught himself from YouTube.

Dean French is also the sole creator of Spot The Aurora, the number one aurora forecasting app built right here in New Zealand. What started as a personal project born from too many late nights staring at the sky has become the go-to tool for aurora chasers across the country.
The same eye for timing and light that makes Dean a great photographer went straight into building an app that tells you exactly when to look up. Visit www.spottheaurora.co.nz to find out more.
